Tourists for a weekend

When you’re in a relationship, you and your S/O take on new adventures that create memories and improve bonding. In mid-September, after my internship ended, we took our first road trip to Omaha, NE. We chose Omaha because it’s relatively close and easy to explore in a three-day weekend. The attraction we spent our time at was the Omaha Zoo & Aquarium. Neither of us had visited in over a decade, so it felt like we were seeing everything for the first time.

We share a mutual love at the Omaha Zoo: the aquarium – specifically the penguin exhibit. We enjoyed watching the penguins jump into the water and energetically swim around. One penguin was standing on the rocks under falling snow. The snow started piling on top of his head, but he didn’t move. We imagined he must’ve been thinking, “That feels so good.” We still joke about that.

After the penguin exhibit, there’s a long, transparent glass tunnel where you can sit and watch fish, sharks, and stingrays swim over and around you. Visiting the aquarium always makes me want to travel somewhere more exciting someday like Bora Bora. I was glad he enjoyed it as much as I did.

This road trip marks the first adventure we’re going to have. Escaping reality for even three days brought us closer together. It allowed us to temporarily forget about stress from work, family or the future in my case. It felt wonderful to be in the moment. To lounge around a hotel room, cuddling in a plush queen-sized bed, laughing and enjoying each other’s company. I’m excited about our next escape.
